Where the heck did that phrase (or paraphrase) originate? The first place I
remember hearing it is in a Sugarcubes song, but Im sure it predates that
tune.

I doubt it would be possible to nail it to a specific source.
That said, Douglas Adams used it in 1978 in his Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
(in reference to the market analysts at Sirius Cybernetics Corporation) which
did much to popularise it...
