As far as the state is concerned, the church doesnt, but the church does
require itself to abide by the laws of the land. If the US government says gays
can get married, it doesnt mean that the church would have to perform or even
recognize such marriages. It means they cant prevent them from happening, just
like the Catholic church cant prevent you from getting a basic divorce and then
marrying someone else, even though, in their eyes, youre still married to your
first wife unless you got an anullment.
