But, tangentially related, here's a story

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=493&ncid=762&e=1&u=/ap/20040624/ap_en_mo/film_fahrenheit_911

in which some conservative group apparently wants to block Mr. Moore from
advertising his movie at certain time periods because to do so violates campaign
finance laws.

Talk about reaching! If they don't like the movie they shouldn't go see it or
they should mount their own information campaign encouraging people not to see
it or disseminating information that makes the opposite case.

This case proves to me at least that campaign finance control is a fundamentally
flawed idea. No matter how the law is amended there will always be loopholes(2),
and, worse, groups that try to use it as a bludgeon against their opponents.

I'd be a lot more impressed with this group, whoever they are(3) if they
campaigned for repeal of this law instead of trying to use it against voices
they don't agree with.

1 - Perhaps it is impossible, or very difficult to refute? Perhaps Dave can't
think of a refutation. Perhaps Dave has concluded that it's not a good use of
his time to try to refute it... Not every post needs to be replied to!

2 - such as groups that don't support any particular candidate, or such as
deciding that maybe not accepting the nomination for a while is a good idea, etc
etc etc.

3 - they are possibly some newly manufactured group running on soft money fuel
(see (2)) that got whomped up as a stalking horse for the Bush campaign, or
possibly some group with a deep heritage, who knows.

(...) I think they have a case. How would a commercial promoting a movie that criticizes a political candidate differ in kind from a commercial criticizing a political candidate paid for by a political opponent? (...) No I'm not. Reread what you cited. "tends to suggest" is hardly Summarily Dismissed. Further, being wrong about an issue or cause is not the same as dismissing the issue or cause. I dismiss his opinions about issues (for valid cause since he's (...) (20 years ago, 21-Jun-04, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
