I agree with everything James wrote, but I think the truly beneficial course of
action is for the government to get out of the business of certifying certain
interpersonal contracts as having special value. The People should be free to
contract however they wish -- including whichever of the current marriage
benefits they want to write in (so long as other institutions, like insurance
companies opt to go along) and whichever other covenants theyd like to include.
Making all marriage a civil union would be a good step, but hopefully not the
endpoint of this evolution.
