I have the impression that in nations with a richer socialist tradition (like
the UK), it is much more acceptable to accept from the public coffers the kind
of aid thats being discussed here and in turn, to take seriously the
responsibility incurred to society to pay it back -- not in like kind, but by
being a good and productive member of society (a sort of noblesse oblige --
though thats not exactly right). Im wondering two things: a)Is that true, or
just an over-romanticized outlook? b)If it is true, might that difference (such
a sense is quite uncommon here in the US) be contributory to the stalemate in
conversation here?
