Hence, as a Christian, I’m pretty much willing to wrestle with any and all issues to come to a better understanding.

I don’t see the disagreement here. I think you are saying that you DO allow questions to enter into your faith-schema, and that your faith has so far “survived” (I couldn’t think of a better word here) these challenges. I don’t think anyone can have a problem with that -- not that you care even if we did.

Contrary to possible appearances, I don’t think that I or Dave! seek to attack any believers of any particular faith out of hand. There is no agenda to make you not believe, or to believe in ways that we find acceptable. Everyone is free to believe whatever they want, acceptable to us or not. It would be my observation that we all enjoy the rigorous philosophical banter that goes on in this forum -- usually.

Here’s where I stop speaking on Dave!’s behalf -- he can, of course, speak for himself.

For myself, I just can’t stand to see people raise untrue statements. I am going after John not because of what he believes but ONLY for the pointedly false statements and false impressions that he communicates. He made a very particular and bigotted statement and I feel compelled to make him swallow it back again. In doing so, I reveal the false nature of the statement. I am not a member of the Islamic faith, but I am not going to let another participant of this forum make a bald-faced attack on that faith system without a fight.

Mike P wrote: “Nevermind the fact that most people are too close-minded to realize that those of the Christian, Jewish, and Muslim faiths, all pray to the same god. Allah is the Arabic word for God and is not a name.”

And then John replied with: “Our God is not the same God of people who murder women and children in His name. If you call that close-minded, so be it.”

That exchange, through no fault on Mike’s part, is the lowest point to which off-topic.debate has ever descended, IMHO. I personally will not tolerate intolerance, whether there are any muslim members amongst us or not.

Does no one else see the contrast between those two statements?

I don’t know or care if John is in violation of the TOS. His statement is hateful in every sense of the word, and it doesn’t get a pass from me. John would seem to epitomize the person searching about for the mote in a brother’s eye when he obviously has a beam sticking out of his own.

I do not spoil for faith-based disputes, but one has found me.

John needs to do a lot of backpedalling here. Frankly, an apology to the known and unknown participants of this forum wouldn’t be amiss in my view.

But you'll never GET such an apology. John is such a PRIDEful Xtian (oops, that's a sin, innit), that he'll never admit that his religion started out of (i.e., is based on), and continues to breed, violence and death. He's a Xtian Bigot, and nothing (...) (21 years ago, 18-Oct-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
