Mexico, throwing 218,000 workers on to the street. Their crime was the
$1.26-an-hour base wage they were paid by companies such as Alcoa Fujikura to
produce auto parts for export to the US. Those wages are now “too high” in
the global economy.

In a somewhat loopy way, this is the result of free markets on a global
scale. Interestingly, no one wins...

Paying a fair wage for a day’s labor is not only ethical, it’s good business
in my view. By paying a fair wage a corporation also creates a new customer
base -- a group of persons able to afford the product of their labors.
How does this simple equation fail to make sense?

Sadly, it’s not an equation to begin with, it’s favoritism for the
monetary/political elite. I agree completely that fair (livable) wages are a
must. After I had stopped my drefting job due to burnout 2 yrs. ago, I took
care of my granmother (without me working; living on my savings & some of hers)
when she had heart trouble for a summer & fall (Apr. to Oct.) By October she’d
recovered so I could get a job, and the first offer I got, I took, at Wal*Mart.
I’ve seen this ‘race to the bottom’ first hand; WM is NOT the smiley company
they want you to think they are. We actually joke about the ‘fishheads & rice’
some poor Chinese child is lucky to get so WM can be the richest company in the
world. WM workers in the states are barely able to afford needs from the stores
they work for.
