Slashdot covered this under the assumption that the RIAA would go after
uploaders -- which is to say, going after the persons sharing out the • infringing
files, and not necessarily downloading them.  This is kind of weird • because I
actually think most of the uploading is going on overseas, although I • could be
wrong. We americans are just leeches -- but we all knew that already, • right?

I just put two things together: Kazaa was sued by the RIAA and found to be
not liable for the songs swapped on its network.  Jesse Jordan (operator of
a network file search engine at a college) was also sued by the RIAA, but
settled with them by giving up his life savings ($12,000).  Both of these
stories can be found on Slashdot.

Why did this happen?  It looks as though Jordan was in the same place as
Kazaa, and if Kazaa isn't liable, I wouldn't think Jordan would be either.
Did he settle only to avoid the time and costs of a lawsuit?  Who does the
RIAA think they are?  "We can't get away with suing Kazaa, so let's bully
some smaller people?"

Sorry Richard, once again I've turned one of your posts to my own purposes.
;)
