is that many crimes are prevented by locking doors too.  That, and having a
dog. And a green martian to defend your house when you are away :)

However, I don't think that you can pin any one factor as being the
causeative factor.  For example, using the armed people prevent crime
thesis, then how come Israel has a higher rate of murder (suicide bombing)
than Canada?

Or, the US has a higher murder rate per capita than Canada?  Or Australia?

Using the theroy (sp) that armed people prevent crimes, it would seem to be
discredited rather quickly by looking at statistics.

(...) OK, how about this; Almost all crimes that are prevented by armed people, rather than something else, are not police but rather armed citizens. Is that better? Seriously though we need to keep this whole "high crime rate in the US" thing is (...) (21 years ago, 17-Jun-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
