A) Your anecdote is poor small sample statistics. Just because your
school in Jersey was blessed by the holy mother of magnetic umbrellae
doesn't mean that applies to the whole of the US.
B) I heard that "statistic" a couple weeks ago at a party and I enjoyed
it enough to pass it along. I haven't researched the facts thoroughly
(or at all, really) and if you call me on something like this again,
I'll have to come after you with my (nontaxable - and guaranteed by God)
arsenal of Uzis, Glocks, AKs, and canisters of Anthrax. ( ;-) for the
clue impaired)

Sure, but why can't people hear the news and still have a clue realizing
that those are news _because_ they are so rare? The news is to blame
when they lie, which isn't all that uncommon, but they can't be blamed
when they report accurate information. The listener is to blame for not
having a clue.

I don't watch TV, so I'm not sure about that, but I thought the
reporting on Mad-Cow and CJD was fairly reasonable. If you're
interested in a good read, check out _Deadly Feasts_. It's a good
science mystery retelling.
