This is a really good book. It has funny stuff as well as lots of really good
tips on building your composting toilet and how to manage the compost heap and
avoid unpleasant odors.
The truth is that we blow huge amounts of energy to purify toilet water,
concentrate our fecal and urinary waste into densities where nothing natural
can ameliorate the toxic concentration, and then to use industrial proceses to
manage the waste problem. An awful lot of other stuff could be done with that
effort if we just composted our own waste at every house. AND, we'd have
incredibly rich humus (not the Medeteranian dip!) in which to garden.
If you're interested in this kind of topic, I'd also suggest anything by Gene
Logsdon, but most specifically _The Contrary Farmer's Invitation to Gardening_
which is a witty explanation of the benefits that we as a society could reap by
engaging in wide-spread back-yard gardening.
And even less related, but still along the same lines is the notion of building
your home from the materials found on site. With just a little land (not a
small city plot) you can build a cob home from clay, sand, and straw by doing
most of the labor yourself with very little cost. Costs (monetary and
environmental impact) go way down when doing the work and not needing to truck
in materials.
You can get these books at a good price and help LUGNET by buying them here
