Why? Because he does not like them?

He is well within his rights to ask for a ban on something he dislikes.
Unlike many calls-for-bans, however, he actually has valid points.

That is your right to think he has valid points, but that is not the point.

Ah, I see.  Validity doesn't enter into it when they have an opinion other
than yours.  Thanks for clearing that up.

Well, because they are barely related, and certainly don't add anything to
the community; in Jon's opinion at least.  Would a fully nude person wearing
Lego earrings or a lego hat be acceptable material for Brickshelf?  It would
be Lego related, afterall.

No, because children would see it - your example is a very poor one.

It isn't a poor example, just an extreme one.

These are as lego-related as the cad images. AFAIK there is not a way to do
this in mclad or ldraw, so this is what they use to celebrate the region of
lego they love. Would you say the mclad and ldraw images should be banned
also? I think not.

No they aren't.  CAD and rendered images are used to show off models that the
creator couldn't otherwise show off, or show them off in ways that they
couldn't otherwise show off.  The avatar images are high bandwidth images that
only serve to identify a user on web forums.

He simply wants them banned because *he* does not like them!

And he is well within his right to do so.  Anyway, all he wants to know right
now is if anyone agrees with him.  Afterall, isn't that how all petitions and
protests start?  Are you saying they were all wrong?

No, not saying that. And once again you choos a very poor example. There are
times where petitions are needed - like if people are being hurt by
something, or if there is something that is causing harm to something. This
is not the case by any stretch of the imagination.

Who decides when a petition or protest is needed?  I'm sure Warner Brothers
doesn't feel petitions for a widescreen release of a movie is needed.  People
who don't like widescreen movies on TV probably don't think such a petition is
needed.  Certainly, no harm is coming to anyone in that situation.  And yet,
Jon feels there IS harm being done, to Brickshelf's signal to noise ratio.  And
you know what?  This kind of situation is *exactly* the reason Lugnet was
started.  The signal to noise ratio on rec.toys.lego was too high for some
people, so they started a new place for Lego fans to congregate.  It probably
wouldn't have been necessary if RTL was moderated.

Is that mature?

Yes.  He posted politely, looking for agreement, and he stated his opinions
honestly.  If you feel this is immature, you need to get reacquainted with
the definition.

The mature thing to do is understand he does not like them and pas over
them, is this really hard to do? (nobody has answered this yet...)

We HAVE answered it.  I'll refer to RTL again.  It was too hard for many people
to "pass over" the noise, and thus Lugnet was created.  People have different
levels of tolerability to such things, its a shame you can't understand that.

And as far as other options for this - there is one - IGNORE THEM! Is that
really hard to do? Really, is it?

Is that really an option?  Do you ask the person who gets 40 spam emails a
day to ignore them?  What about twenty telemarketer phone calls a night?
These are hard to ignore because they are disruptive; as Jon apparently feels
these images are.  Afterall, on any given check of the Recent page, over half
of what shows up seems to be these "avatars" or similar images.

Spam invades your personal email account. Telemarketers invade your personal
phone line.

These avatar images are invading my personal phone line, since I use dial-up.
And if your phone number is in the phone book, it is public knowledge.  And
actually, I don't own my phone line, the phone company does.  Heck, I don't
even own my email account, my employer does.

These images are in a public site, there is nothing personal about brickshelf.
Big difference there.

Um, Brickshelf is NOT a public site.  It is a private site providing free
services to Lego fans.  Kevin can do ANYTHING he wants to the site without
asking the users.  If he decides that Jon has a valid point and agrees, he can
ban the avatar images no matter what you say.

What you are failing to understand is that this is the region of Lego that
these people love, and this is how they show it. Is there anything wrong
with that?

As far as I'm concerned, posting the avatar images are a blatant abuse of the
free service Kevin is providing to us as Lego fans.

Is that hurting you? Is that hurting brickshelf? And make sure you understand
what *hurting* means.

I know very well what hurting means, thank you very much.  These images are
flooding out the content I want to veiw, and are most *certainly* hurting my
viewing experience.  And I'll say again, they are hurting the signal to noise
ratio on Brickshelf.

(...) I don't see how these images are abuse. The TOS only requires that images be related to LEGO products or be of general interest to the LEGO community. Unless one feels that Bionicle Zone is not part of the "LEGO community" I would think that (...) (23 years ago, 6-Jan-02, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
