No, I don't think you'd ever notice the trend in any sort of public forum,
because while it works, the most common reply to a flame is to flame back. I've
kind of noticed that in o-t.debate-- a rather alarming number of the regulars
quite often use insults and sensationalism in their replies, which tends to
generate more of it. People just don't have any sort of good control over it.
You'll also notice I said "quickest" and not "best". Feel free to discuss it
with MM. Quashing flames by being "boring" or "innocent" more generally results
in non-flame responses. I try to do that. And I don't often get heated replies,
BTW. It stops it pretty dead, if only from my perspective. However, MM made the
point that it doesn't teach people any better. Cuz if I stopped being boring,
and made flame responses, I'd get flamed, even if I shouldn't. As for "best",
YMMV.
