I don't really think it's cause for "optimism" -- in my book the longer it
takes before genetic manipulation of humans is commonplace the better! But a
lot of these processes are technologically feasible today, which is why I
put such a short timeframe on them. Don't underestimate the pace of research
in this field. The rough draft of the human genome was completed last year,
5-10 years sooner than predicted in 1995.

In lugnet.off-topic.debate, I speculated:

2002: designer human v1.0
tested for genetic abnormalities, gender in vitro

feasible now

2003: first cloned human being born

feasible now

2004: designer humanoid v1.0
nonhuman DNA incorporated in a viable human embryo

feasible now

2005: first fatherless girl born

feasible now

2006: genetic therapy in post-natal humans begins

I was wrong about this -- it's been happening for several years already:
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/health/july-dec99/gene_therapy.htm

The rest are still speculative, as far as I know, but you get the drift.
