How do you know that we are more white - you only assume (as I do).

No, I count noses in fest pictures.

Hmm. So you are keeping a count? What sort of a person would do that? It is
not a thing I worry about.

I *don't care* what the makeup of LUGNET or the hobby is. I never said I
did. I just said it wasn't the same as the overall population. When you
challenged me I went off and counted noses at that point in order to see if
my hunch was right.

I did not challenge you. This is all noise, BUT saying "I count noses in
fest pictures" make it sound like you do it all the time. I'm glad you don't.

It was, at least for the 20+ fests, meetings, events,
etc., I've attended in 6 countries on 3 continents... (a slightly better
sample set than yours) For the subset that I reviewed pictures, each one of
them was more male than 49% and more white than the population average for
the continent or the country or the state that it was held in.

This is all noise, BUT where did you get the averages from?

(whichever is
a good metric) The point is, though... so what? Ethnic makeup has no
relevance. That is the sum total of my point.

It does for the LP if it claims to aim to help all society.

When you challenge my assertion about proportions and I briefly explain how
I got that sense, you turn it around. Why? To try to imply things that just
aren't true?

You have lost me. I am not trying to imply anything that is not true.

Wow. There's just no way to actually talk to you sensibly, is there? I'd say
you are bankrupt in the idea department if that's the best you can do.

Youch! Another insult!

That is not really the question (LUGNET does not attempt to represent the
views of society). The question is : Why is the LP so "white"?

<snipped reassertion of the same question>

I'll ask it again:
Why does the LP only attract white males? Why is that? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why?

The question is why does it matter? Demonstrate that the ethnic, racial,
religious etc.

We shall move on to the religious make-up later. :-)

makeup of a group has actual bearing on the validity of ideas
the group espouses first, please.

I suppose it depends on what the LP is about. If it is a bunch of
businessmen making a living out of your subscription fee then it does not
really matter. If it is an organisation which seeks to fundamentally change
the way the whole of society lives then I think its composition does matter.

Which is it?

It is the latter. Go ahead and demonstrate *why* it matters. Hint, merely
asserting it does won't do.

I have already, and Dave has too.

(...) Dave voiced some concerns, which I addressed. Your contribution, on the other hand, consists of "why why why why why why". I had a 3 year old who did that, but he grew out of it. ++Lar (23 years ago, 15-Jun-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

(...) Why does LUGNET (in general) attract well educated white males? From my observations, Larry is right. LUGNET does not represent the statistical make-up of the countries in which it resides. Is this due to education? Economical status? (...) (23 years ago, 15-Jun-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
