Pound coins do make life easier!
Except for posting money, one couldn't send off a pound note
to a charity, one only had a fiver! They suffered for a while
as a result.
In a coin's favour:
The smallest denomination notes wear out phenomenally quickly.
Associated costs are the need to print large amounts, frequently.
A coin lasts a long, long time. Living in the US up to 1987,
can remember receiving the occassional '30's nickel, '40's
penny. Before the coinage changed to a smaller, more easily
manageable size, would frequently pocket in change coins from
the 1940's and 1950's.
