First, no apologies are necessary. You obviously have some things you wish
to express.
> The moral issue I've maintained is "who invaded who" and "who is oppressing >who" and I'll add "who is supporting the oppressor." With that in mind, it >baffles me that anyone who values justice and human rights could ever take >the side of Israel, or support America's policy toward Israel.
To be honest, I don't support much of anything outside of U.S. borders. I
want to mind my own business in relation to my neighbors, and I want U.S.
foreign policy to reflect a similar laissez faire attitude to the world at
large. I don't want to be a part of the U.N. I don't believe in a League
of Nations. I don't want to make the world safe for democracy or for
anything else. I like to stay small and mobile and make alliances as they
seem appropriate.
And I don't support the state of Israel. I would probably have opposed its
creation, but I wasn't alive yet when it happened and no one consulted me
about it. But Israel exists and we have to deal with the world as it is. I
don't think we are going to get all those people off the land after the
passage of the momentous decades since the creation of Israel. Its just
gone too far. And history lessons tell us nothing about how to achieve a
new and lasting peace with the situation as it IS. You want to dredge up
the whole issue from its inception, and while I understand why you feel that
way, I am telling you that nothing will come of it. Palestine lost the
political argument then, and it won't win it now. I don't happen to think
the American Indians will ever get back Manhattan either...
My bias is entirely in favor of peace, however it may be achieved...
I support both the state of Palestine and Israel together in peace.
I want the world to be better than it has been. I want enemies in the world
to agree not to kill or harass each other. I want world-wide torture to
stop. I want greater respect for women. I want systematic genocide to end.
I want property in the hands of the many and not just the few -- while still
favoring capitalism and democratic republics. I want drug problems to be
dealt with by health professionals rather than by cops. And I don't really
want my MTV any longer...
...and my wants, too, may go unfulfilled in my lifetime.
Peace be with you, Brother.

| In replying both to Richard and Dan - I agree. We all want peace, and naturally everyone's peace will be on different terms. We cannot change the past, but we can try and deal with what's here. I agree that Israel as it was formed was not a good (...) (24 years ago, 7-May-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
