I’ll post more later, once I’ve taken a closer look.

Dave!

I just got back from lunch at Walmart, and held/inspected some of those sets. Then I get back and check out Lugnet, and you report on the MB site update.

My report: I looked at the following sets; 1911, 1916, 1917, and one other set that had a collecter’s tin (don’t know set number). Very cool. MJ definately has a “chest.” And the Venom fig is pretty cool too.

My local Walmart had most of the new sets when I was in earlier this week. Set 1931 Spider-man vs. Venom is the one that comes in a metal box (like the chess set from a year or two ago).

Target did have the new Radiax and Solaris Dragons, as well as the Unleash set, but not the others from that Dragons series. Unleash looks pretty neat and would make a creditable display on a desk, but the Dragon doesn’t appear to be articulated and is of a much smaller scale than conventional MB Dragons.

Unleash was the only one of the three ‘Spellcasters’ sets that Walmart had also. I was surprised that these sets only come with 4-5 pieces. They appear to be more desk displays (as you noted) rather than construction sets. The Radiax and Solaris Dragons come with what is billed as “2 collectable battle helmets”.

Having looked at the MegaBloks site more thoroughly, I pronounce myself to be really looking forward to picking up some of these Marvel sets. I couldn’t care less about the “Tech-Bot” sets, which strike me as the latest embodiment of this twice- (or thrice-)failed figure concept in this scale, but maybe they’ll get lucky this time. I’m also not really interested in the superhero vehicles per se, but I’m glad that the figures will apparently be available in comparatively inexpensive sets.

Wolverine’s claws appear to be some kind of snap-on piece with a minifig-standard gripping handle, but I could be wrong. Spiderman looks cool, just as he did on the preview we saw here a few weeks ago, but The Thing looks amazing! Whoever did the sculpt on that one should get a bonus.

At $5.88 apiece I couldn’t resist picking up the 3 small Superhero sets. They come in cases shaped like the Superheroes head. 1906 Spider-man: Dave! and I had a discussion about Mega Blok figs vs. Lego figs a couple of months ago, with me prefering Lego minifigs. However, I must say the Mega Bloks Superhero figs look really good. One advantage Spidey has over his Lego counterpart is no unsightly stud on top of his head. The vehicle is dissapointing. The legs are one piece with no articulation and the main body of the vehicle sits flat on the table instead of being held a brick height or two above it (which I think would look better). 1907 Wolverine: The vehicle is blah, but the fig is cool looking. The best thing about this set is Wolvies claws - as Dave! speculated, they are separate from the hands and can be held by any minifig. Right now one of my Alpha Team figs is sporting a fine and dangerous looking pair of claws... 1908 The Thing: This is my favorite of the three figs. The sculpt is great! The one problem he has is his torso is so massive that he looks a little silly with his wee little legs. From the box art the vehicle in this set impressed me the least out of the three, but after building it I like it the best. The wings use a hinge made up of four pieces in blue. I don’t know if these are new, but they make a very strong hinge. The vehicle itself is very “swooshable”.

Walmart also had the new Nano stuff and 2 of the 4 Pokemon sets that were mentioned earlier in another thread. The Pokemon sets come in a Poke-ball that has four studs on top. The four sets are: 3501 Pikachu: 95 pieces 3502 Treecko: ? pieces 3503 Mudkip: ? pieces 3504 Torchic: 90 pieces They retail (at Walmart) for $5.88.

Also on the shelves: The two new Ninja Turtle sets. 4506 Mutation Garage 135 pieces 4507 Space Lab 120 pieces Each comes with two figs: a Turtle and an Elite Foot Guard. The package is shaped like a turtle shell and opens up so you can build the set inside. I picked up the Space Lab set. It’s about equivalent with the previous Turtle sets. They retail for (again at Walmart) $12.88.

Thanks for the sighting info, Richard!

Dave!
