Hi Nathan

   Great website Beat!

Thank you for your compliments concerning my homepage and my models.

Are the tracks on the real thing really red?

Yes, they are. But only for the first few hours of operation. Of course, they don’t have to be red but it is the color scheme, Albian Sands has ordered their five 495HFs in.

So far I only have seen pictures of Bucyrus 495HF and HR shovels in white. Either with red, blue or green stripes. Booms and lower carriages always seem to be in black color.

Two of the names you used are very familiar to me- Bucyrus-Erie and Marion. These are both areas around where I live in Ohio, USA. There is (was) also a crane called “Big Muskey” here that weighed 27,000,000,000 lbs. However, I think it got dismantled for parts. It could be seen from several kilometers away.

Then you were more luckily than me. Unfortunately I never had the chance to see Big Muskie and never will get to see it, expect for the bucket which is on display somewhere in the region where Big Muskie used to operate.

But fortunately I have some good pictures of it in several books and in digital form.

A LEGO rendition of that behemoth would be great and I know someone working on it. But currently I can’t think of a suitable solution for the walking mechanism as on the real machine giant hydraulic cylinders have been used for that purpose.

Thanks again and greetings from Switzerland

Beat

(...) Great website Beat! It looks like you combine model team and technic which is hard to do, considering one theme is based on aesthetics and the other on function. The models look perfect and sturdy. Are the tracks on the real thing really red? (...) (19 years ago, 16-Jun-05, to lugnet.technic, lugnet.modelteam, FTX)
