I'm not sure how much of an effect this will have. They have no idea how
much you increased your bid. Back when eBay was losing the ability to
show your maximum bids, I was increasing my bid by one cent to get it to
show up again. The way this worked was that you bid one increment more
than the high bid at the time (if your bid was already at its maximum,
you then increased your bid - oh well). Assuming your actual maximum was
much higher, eBay then told you "you didn't bid higher than your current
bid, your current bid is $8.99 [or whatever]". You then submitted a bid
for $9.00, and then your new maximum showed up in your My eBay, at least
until My eBay lost it again.
The system also always told you the number of total bids placed. If you
were the one placing the other bids, you could relatively easily tell
that I had submitted a new bid since the count would bump, but no one
else would show up in the bid history, and you know you didn't place
another bid (in fact, even if a 3rd party is involved, if the current
price didn't change, the high bidder must have been the one who placed
the new bid). Now all it does is make it easier for you to see who's
bidding and how often.

| (...) Yep, It looks like it will be a lot easier for bidders to raise the price you you for an item, since it will indicate that you have increased your max. So if the auction sells for more, FeeBay makes more! John (24 years ago, 17-Oct-00, to lugnet.market.auction)
