I think that this might be the reason that it is taking so long to get Lego
Direct up and running. They are apparently pplanning to offer their product
worldwide, and thus are most likely dealing with these fulfillment problems
as we speak.
Granted, I would like the service to be here NOW, but I think that it will
be better for everyone in the long run if we wait a bit and let LEGO figure
out how to do it RIGHT for everyone.
Based on my limited knowledge of distribution systems, I would envision a
small number of "Master" warehouses that would be "fully stocked" and
located near LEGO's major production facilities. These would then feed into
"Regional" warehouses that would probabably have to be located in every
major country that LEGO plans to do business with. (I say this to avoid
shipping and customs problems when shipping to the customer. This way, all
duties if any would be absorbed when LEGO imported the sets into the
country)
Of course, the million dollar question is how to know in advance what stock
to send to which warehouse, and when to send it. I suppose that regularly
scheduled deliveries could be made to each warehouse. That way, orders
could be taken in each country for items in the master warehouse inventory,
and then shipped only when the master warehouse makes it's scheduled
delivery to that country.
Not the prettiest solution, and one that requires much overhead. Which
again, is probably why it is taking so long for Lego Direct to get going....
