Obviously due to the inexact nature of trades, one does expect some
negotiation, and possibly dealing with multiple offers, but if you want
to shake out the best offer, and play offers off against each other, you
should indicate that in your initial offer.
If you haven't indicated that you are doing a trade auction, once you
get fairly far along in trade negotiations, I would think that one
should not play offers off against each other at all, though you may
still be pushing for more from the person you're in negotiation with
(which could be based on previous offers). If the trade falls through,
then you can re-open negotiations with the other traders.
I have only once or twice had competing trade offers. The one I remember
best, the first (serious (1)) offer was so far beyond my expectations
that while I mentioned what the offer was to the other people making
offers, I basically told them they were out of luck. I think one person
did offer to match the first offer, but obviously I wasn't going to take
that offer.
You asked in your other post about values of specific parts. There isn't
a "price guide" which makes it hard for new traders to know the value of
some of their parts. I don't think we want to see a price guide, but it
would be nice if we came up with a rough value guide for some of the
more popular parts, with recognition that the value is always subject to
change.
(1) I offered a torso from 383 Knights Tournament in exchange for
Wolfpack or pirate figures, and was offered 3 Wolfpack torsos. I think I
did have an offer before that for a single pirate or somesuch which I
had about rejected before seeing the 3 Wolfpack offer.
