To follow up...
Since the buyer didn't care about the box, I "decanted" it into a box
that was easier to ship: a 11"x14"x9" "bankers box". I taped it up
securely and took it to the post office. I sent it Airmail ($37.25
postage + $3.60 insurance) on July 25, and it arrived on August 2.
I'd say it went pretty well, all in all.
