I hadn't heard the term before but yes, the boxes in question are
exactly
what you've described as a "Lego bee". To answer your questions:

There is no set number of people involved. The sign-up lists just keep
getting longer (faster than names are rolling off the top it seems. :)

It started a little over a month ago (I think - not checking the actual
dates at the moment) thanks to a generous donation of parts from Lugnet
guru Todd Lehman and a generous donation of time (and postage) from
Larry Pieniazek. There are several boxes, some containing specific types
of parts that started from that group, plus one started by Christopher
Weeks.

You get on a box's list by replying to the message announcing the start
of its journey. This website has pointers back to all the announcement
messages and the latest lists of participants except for the Weeks box:

The intro messages have details about what's in each box (though many
are pretty self-descriptive.)

I believe there are now 11 boxes making the rounds including the Weeks
box.

As mentioned above, Todd Lehman was the instigator of this nifty social
experiment.

Yes, anyone can get in on this (assuming they have some Lego to add to
the
box).

There was some discussion early on of trying to keep the boxes from
going
directly from, say, a castle fan to another castle fan since the first
person would naturally take many of the same pieces the second person
would want. Trying to actually track that's been more work than anyone's
been willing to tackle thus far. Tamy Teed (tracker of the lists) has
been lucky just to keep up with all the requests.

That's a pretty sketchy intro but I probably won't be the only person
to answer. :-) Most of the sign-up lists are dauntingly long now but
all you new folks keep an eye out - I should be starting up a new box
sometime after Labor Day and will give preference to folks not already
on another list (or way down them) to get more people involved.

What are these boxes?
Are they a Lego bee?
Where someone starts a box, and it goes from person to person each one adding
pieces they don't need and taking those they need?
How many people are in this round?
When did it start?
How do you get on this list?
How many bowes do you have going?
Who started this neat idea?
Can anyone get into this?
If this is not a Lego bee, has anyone thought of starting one?  Since I'm sure
we all have some pieces we would rather trade off then try to sell.
I know for some it would take alot of trust to just box up some of our not
needed but valuable legos and just send them off, hopping that in the end we
get back some that we do need.  A wish list could be added to the box so that
as it goes around if someone has pieces that are on someone elses wish list
they could set them aside in the box for that person, or just send them
directly, if they find something in the box for themselves.

Comments?

Ideas?

Are the boxes moving around and people just aren't posting about it or are
they all languishing in the last recipient's corner? We've had news on one
box in the past week out of what, 10 or 11 boxes? Do we need a rule like • if
it takes you more than a week (or less, I mean how long does it take to • dig
through a little box of Lego?) to get the box to the next person you get
knocked to the bottom of every other list you're on?

So come one people, status reports please!

Doug (waiting impatiently :-)
