Indeed. Now i know what these are! I think many of us have some of the
common ones (perhaps with additional lobes so that they form cubes or
spheres, etc) and I have an old hexagonal  variant on this sort of puzzle too..

Eric's got a link to IBM's site on Burrs, and you can design your own, but
translation to LEGO is up to you.

link, IBM Research does get to work on some of the coolest stuff sometimes!
