One thing everyone has forgotten - good old USPS - why not send a letter to
his mailing address and ask for confimation of delivery. You can even send
certified mail via their web interface without ever leaving your home
http://www.usps.com/netpost/certifiedmail/
Say for the sake of argument there some medical problem requiring
hospitalization - most people aren't going to have access to their email but
someone is probably getting their snail mail for them.
