Larry, We pulled our hair out over this one too. In an attempt to be fair - in an environment that allows both firm and proxy bids - we arrived at the following, which acts in favor of the existing high bidder in 2 of 3 cases:: Starting bid $100. I think AucZILLA works differently (but I can't recall for certain - that's Todd's baby) I know e-bay does it differently(1), which implies, at least, that Everyauction and similar servers would follow suit. I don't know how AucZILLA works- but a lot of commercial auction sites claim to have taken this into account and claim that the earlier bid would win. When describing proxy bidding, sites like ebay state: "Also, in case of a tie for high bidder, (...) (26 years ago, 19-Apr-99, to lugnet.market.auction)

I (as well as all other participants) got a note from Ian Bishop in early March about a proxy quandary that had arisen. Seems he had a bidder that had bid 285 (a winning bid at the time) with proxy cap of 300. Someone else subsequently bid 300. Ian (...) (26 years ago, 19-Apr-99, to lugnet.market.auction)
