Hello!
Ahhh, I was HOPING someone would have seen this auction. I have a few
comments. First of all, for those of you who don't know, this set has been
on eBay four separate times. The first time, I bought the set MIB.
However, it was missing a couple of the blue pieces. That's okay, because I
got the set for $55. I KNEW how rare this set and I put in a large amount.
The second one went up for auction about, ohhhh, 2 months ago? The set was
MISB which I thought was impressive. I can't think of the high bidder but
the set sold for around the ballpark of $200!!!
The third one went up two weeks ago or so. Sold for $200 by none other than
esc1. And if you check, the set was missing almost all stickers!
And finally the last MISB one went up last week and sold for $1525.
This actually makes my stomach churn for a number of reasons. First, this
set is extremely rare and many people know it's rare. So why in the heck
did this set not go for more money in the beginning? The price has steadily
increased from the very first auction. Why did I get the first set for such
a cheap price? Why did the first MISB one offered go for such a small
amount (small compared to the most recent)?
The answer is simple. These new "deep pocket" bidders see that a set went
for a lot of money in previous auctions and instantly they feel it is rare.
It's no rarer than the first. These bidders that raise the prices on such
rare items are doing so because of the Lego name...not because of the rarity
of the set.
That is where the collectors are heading. They are buying the sets and
other Lego items strictly for the name. I just get the impression they just
store sets away (in one case) or sell all their MISB sets at a later point
in time to make a profit off of Lego (in a second case). And then there's
me who does not have a lot of money at my disposal to buy Lego's.
Therefore, I buy doubles of old sets, sell on eBay, get some more money,
then go back out and buy more Lego's I need...BECAUSE I ENJOY IT, NOT
BECAUSE OF THE LEGO NAME!
on a small note, I compliment that second high bidder with zero feedback for
putting in one bid of $1500! That's the way it should go. It only takes
one bid. I commend you 8433Lego.
Just my opinion! :-)

| (...) Hi, I am new to Lugnet. I got this set at eBay for 224 dollars. I do feel very lucky. The woman who sold this really had no idea how big Lego is and was surprised at the amount she got for it. I am fortunate indeed because the one that went (...)
