Well, I can't speak to how limited the canned stuff is, since I haven't played
with it yet, but what do you mean by "a bit more generalized contest"? Taking
 into consideration the following criteria,
 - Primarily designed for two competitors, with potential to allow any
number of independent competitors (i.e., no team coordination).
-Parts vocabulary limited, such as to a single stock MS RIS + RS kit,
additional by class (i.e., limited sensors, motors, etc.).
 - Software unlimited (home-grown encouraged).
 - Autonomous only (no remote control or assistance).
Some ideas I had would be:
 - Crane: be the tallest structure to expand from being able to fit under a
 bar at a lower height (e.g., 12").
 - Tag: in a rectangular enclosed field, seek and touch an opponent, then
 avoid being touched.
 - Hunting: fastest to find unobscured goal.
 - Race: first to a goal, but without deviating from course (circular or
 straight).
 - Egg race: first to move an object (ball, puck, feather, cup of water, cat
;^)...) to goal without deviating from course.
 - Crab race: first to upright self from back.
 - Climbing: vertical ascent of a rope, stairs, ramp, etc.
 - Maze solving: first out of a maze, individual best times, or group
 competition.
 - Weight lifting: lift the most weight.
 - Tug of war.
 - Javelin/Shotput: furthest projectile.
 - Target: most accurate projectile.
 - Soccer (Rugby?): in a rectangular enclosed field, push a ball to the
opponent's goal, avoiding or besting obstacles (opponent), and keeping
 possession of ball.
 - Watchdog:  in a rectangular enclosed field, force opponent into a corner.

 - Sumo: seek opponent, and push: outside of a circle, to a goal, away from
 a goal, etc.
 - King of the Hill: in a rectangular field with a low-rise pyramidal shaped
floor, take and keep the highest point.
 - Tennis/volleyball?
Surely I'm not the first to think of this, doesn't anyone already have anything
 similar?
