Some years ago I walked in to an engineering building at MIT and summoned up the
nerve to ask some professors what they were working on. They had been meeting in
an open central area before splitting up to their offices. To my amazement, the
first guy I approached was thrilled to tell me and my bashful friend (hiding by
the elevator) all about their current project. At that age it did a lot to
bolster my initiative. After all, I was walking into this legendary place in a
strange city.
Before just walking in, however, my friend had gone by the registrar to check in
as a visiting prospective student.
