After the wonderfully successful Legofest in San Francisco in October, a
few of us were thinking about doing a similar event in Carlsbad for the
20-21 March 1999 weekend.  This is the opening weekend for Legoland
California.  To do the planning, we need to get some feedback on some
issues.

The basic plan is that we all meet in Carlsbad for the opening of Legoland
California.  We try to connect up on Saturday 20 March 1999 while spending
the day at the amusement park.  That evening and much of following Sunday,
we could meet, sell, buy, trade, and display in a function room at a nearby
timeshare/resort hotel complex where some of us will be staying.

The meeting room is going to cost us.  What do people think about
contributing $5.00 per person to offset the room rental costs and some
refreshments?

The intent is to give every participant at least half a table to use for
displaying creations and/or engage in trading.  Hopefully, there will be
enough free floor space to also allow a train and monorail setup, but this
is not certain.  Also in the plans are badges to identify people, and signs
to identify the tables, and special interests.

There is also a possibility that part of the money could be used to create
grab bags, if there is a surplus of money.  The grab bags would be made
from newly purchased sets, broken up for parts.  The parts from any
particular set would be distributed among several grab bags, but related
parts (like both parts of a hinge, or whole minifigures) would be kept
together.  The grab bags would be sealed so no one knows what is inside any
of them.  The grab bags will not be specific to a particular theme, and may
contain elements from several.

To make all this happen, we need to know what the level of interest is. Are
people coming to the opening of Legoland Carlsbad?  Is a $5.00 contribution
reasonable?  How about a $10.00 contribution if we are short of money to
pull this off?  Is making this a two day event a good idea?  Is a train and
monorail setup a good idea?  Do we need an area set aside for robotics?

Because we would have some refreshments available, we were also thinking of
asking $2.50 for each non-Lego participant.  This would cover spouses,
significant others, and the kids.  The money would entitle them access to
the room, and to the refreshments, but not to the grab bags or other
goodies.

I'm also looking for ideas for special events or contests.  The "Guess how
many elements are in a jar" was very popular.  What are some other ideas?
I'd rather not do the "biggest/smallest/most pieces model on display" idea
because some people will be traveling a considerable distance and can not
bring their creations.  And oldest/youngest/farthest participant eliminates
most people from participating.

As a temporary measure, please e-mail your comments to me at
GaryLouie@EarthLink.Net.  I'll try to put together a temporary mailing list
to discuss planning issues.  If this idea really takes off, I'll ask
someone to create an e-mail bounce.

Heck, you can just this newsgroup (lugnet.loc.us.ca.sd -- there's more than enough room in it :) and then you get automatic archiving (useful since March is several months away) and broader participation than a pure mailing list. I will actually be in Annaheim for a meeting from March 21-25 (or at least part of it) so I might be able to make the fairly short trip to Carlsbad for the opening! Paying $5 for the space would probably be a bargain and it certainly wouldn't deter (...) (26 years ago, 23-Nov-98, to lugnet.loc.us.ca.sf)

(...) I think this is a swell idea. I have been mulling how much of a sales job this would take... My NLSO emphasizes the N. :-) Please include me on any info that transpires... (26 years ago, 24-Nov-98, to lugnet.loc.us.ca.sd)
