Hi,

Oh well, Some more thoughts:

I quote from Lorry's original note:
"and you can employ it as your main promotional tool or simply as a page
that bridges
out to another site you've already created."
This seems to me pretty clear that its OK to have links to our original
site. How many links have they removed so far?  I don't see this as a big
issue, unless they get a complaint about a link. If they want to control the
content and links to existing organizations' web sites, they won't get many
participants.

Sounds like a legal out so that links to adult sites and less than desirable
content can be deleted without hassle. It probably will work in our favor too
being that we're family-oriented to a big degree. We had a few families drop
by at the last meeting IIRC. Let's not forget to get some pix of them! Natural
unidentifiable stuff of course, or else we have to print up waivers.. :(

I think its more of an out so they can kill links to
"undesirable" content...  Like the picture of my rear end on Russell's page.
;-D

lol  At least there's no "refrigerator repairman thing" going on there..

If they want new content each week, how about we link in the loc.us.ca.sf
traffic for the last week, with Todd's OK of course.  I find it hard to
believe that Cox expects any small to medium sized non-profit or community
group to have something going on to report or update the site
"substantially" weekly.

True. But SF is considered major; it's the number 5 tv market in the country,
number 4 for radio. We're about neck-n-neck with the Philadelphia metro. It
might be exactly what they're expecting.

It seems to me that the list of clubs and organizations that can keep a
website fresh every week is kinda small. It almost sounds like this is geared
more for organizations rather than clubs. But that's not to say it shouldn't
be discussed/looked into more.

I think that anyone who could do it weekly probably has the
resources/connections/time to get the word out about their site without really
having to tap into anyone else. Heck, anyone could register their site with
all the major search engines and get substantial notoriety that way too. It
almost sounds like Cox is building their own search engine.

Unless the group is the United Way or something
with loads of members, or weekly events. Lets just tell them we only have 1
big event each quarter, and "Thank you but we do not expect to require
weekly changes to the site."

I think we should tell them what we want to do, and let Lorry smooth it for
us!  The worst thing that happens is either they won't let us in, or we get
kicked off for not having sufficiently dynamic and compelling content, and
end up back where we are now. Fine with me.

That sounds good. Are you then for the idea of quarterly meetings? :)  If they
happen to settle for once a month, we could probably write some new content.
I'm quite a windbag if you haven't figured that out. I could contribute set
reviews a few times a year. Heck, we all probably could write at least two set
reviews a year and it might be enough.

Comments?
Mark

Not being a "baylug web coder" this may be a stupid • question, but couldn't
we just mirror the first two pages of the Baylug site to Bay • Insider, and
not have to maintain 2 sites?

Unfortunately, it's not going to be that simple. :-(

The Bay Insider project is part of a larger Cox Media production.
By signing up, we get access to a front-end tool to make web pages
within their environment (basically, filling fields on the records
of a large text and image-capable database). We can add HTML to some
fields, but we will still be contrained by the tools.

That's kind of a bummer. Even with Tripod you can post your own HTML..

But, for someone who's had almost no experience doing this before, yet has the
time, it could be a good thing.

The publishing agreement includes the expected rules and
disclaimers,
but has one sentence that may be a problem. I quote:

"We also reserve the right to remove any link from your
pages to any
    other on-line service."

Now, BayLUG isn't AOL or Earthlink...but I don't know if
the links to
members pages on BayLUG.org will bother the Cox censors. We can try to
put something together, and see what they say.

My initial guess is that they wouldn't have a problem with it. How many
organizations already have their own site? It almost sounds like they want a
couple of things: 1) to provide webspace for free to acceptable non-profits,
either so that non-profits will switch completely over to them, so they can
get a huge tax deduction; 2) they're trying to improve their own community
involvement as a mechanism to build up their library of "community stuff" so
they can have an easier time reporting/broadcasting such items: the media now
pulls more info from the web than you might think as they have realized they
can now grab stories literally from anywhere if they want.

The other issue that may plague us, is that they expect the content
to be 'fresh', changing at least weekly. I quote again:

"Once your pages are built, your representative update and
substantially
refresh your content regularly (typically at least every week)."

This means that our delegate/weaver for the Bay Insider pages will
likely need to be somewhat active. Since they will be posting an email
address for folks to write for more info, I suppose the Bay Insider
weaver could also work up a BayLUG FAQ page, based on the questions
from other folks. ;-)

<gulp> As if this little project wasn't busy enough already.. :P  If no single
volunteer appears, could we rotate weavers or something?
