As children only know two speeds fast forwards or fast backwards, I use a
multi-voltage adapter instead of the LEGO one so I can set the maximum speed to
keep the trains on the track.

Hello David,

We're doing a similar thing for the St Wilfrid's Summer Fair on 28th June. Can
you advise if your multi-voltage adapter is an AC-out unit ot a DC-out one?

I've had the same experience with my Santa Fe - disapointing performance but
lovely model in other respects.

It was the first time I had the Santa Fe (one
loco, one motor & three coaches) running on an exhibition layout. I found that
when it was running that I had to have the power on full, then when another
train ran, I had to lower the voltage or else the train would come off the track
at the corners.
Also I found that the Santa Fe was OK going round the oval and along the
straight part of points but struggled going through the curved part of the
points. I therefore placed the station on the straight section of the passing
loop.

I didn't find any potential AFOL's and was slightly disappointed that no one
commented on my goods depot and water tower I made after the Brickish
Association AGM or that I had a Glenrothes sticker on the signal box.

Towards the end of the event the children realised that they could run a loco on
its own, or change coaches and do shunting.

One of the organisers said "I kept the children away from the adult layouts"

A bit cheeky, that one! The last Lego train display I saw (Derby, April 03)
featured Mark Bellis's large scale stuff and there was plenty of adult interest.
All you need to do is look extremely interested at the real model railway
layouts then refer to the lovely toy trains - watch them fume!

My next event is at Perth on 28 & 29th June

Good luck - sorry I can't be there as that's the same day as the NBLTC 'drive a
train' event at the St Wilfrid's School Summer Fair.

(...) Unless you take a sharp knife and cut slivers of plastic from the wheel mounting blocks where the edges of the wheels rub, the Santa Fe will always be a disappointment when running. After 'surgery', my two locos (with one motor) and eight (...) (21 years ago, 7-Jun-03, to lugnet.loc.uk)
