Yeah, I've noticed. I paid 5000 ESP last February in Spain, and my bank
charged me about 6000 PTE (which is the exact conversion) **PLUS** 500 PTE
for fees! A real shame, I was expecting that intra-europe fees had been
abolished (or at least greatly reduced).
But this is not something "new", it is a very old procedure that is only
today getting "visible" for the general public. In short term, I believe
that this sort of fee will be abolished, by popular pressure (The people
will complain: "What has the Euro brought us? We keep paying the same...",
and the banks will eventually comply)
I am not really intending to do purchases outside Portugal frequently, nor
in great value, so I can just send a banknote by mail when I trust the
seller. So I will not be experiencing this sort of problem frequently. It is
just great that there is no longer an exchange-risk, nor the frequent stress
when travelling abroad and making frequent "brainwork" for simple things
such as buying the paper or a coffee.

Eh eh eh... I couldn't agree more! But it is not *our* loss... ;-)
And yes, these new banknotes are really beautiful! My compliments to the ECB
for having chosen these designs!
