I fronted my insurance company with a spreadsheet of all the sets that we
have instructions for (not necessarily full sets with boxes, but a start).
It listed the number of pieces in each set (most of them) and where possible
the purchase price.
This gave a rough guide to the cost per piece, which was then applied to
those sets with a known no of pieces but no price.
A approximation I know, as it excludes all those thousands of pieces bought
at the markets etc.
Then again, any disaster which took out a significant portion of our
collection would leave the house in such a mess lego would not be formost in
our list of problems. I'm discounting robbery, as it would take a team of
thieves a day to collect it all.
