Sunday BUGS held their 10th meet. Although the theme was Transport (plans
train & automobles), several buildings were brought along and conversation
was definitetly based around an upcoming event. More on that later.

The day was hosted by Ken, and wife Frances (who did an outstanding job
keeping us feed, i'm sure there was not one person who wasn't hungry by the
end of the day.
Attendess for the day included, Ken (of course), Aaron (who didn't get lost
despite using computer generated directions), Kerry, Melody, Peter, Micheal,
Mark (fashionably late), Gary (who had the great news), and Calumn.

On arrival, we inspected ken small but modest train collection, and his
display. Melody brought along her creation for the 2002 town competition.
Kerry brought along a large church that she built after being inspired by a
MOC on the web. Aaron had nothing new to show Lego wise but did bring along
his new toy (a digital camera) and a few fire trucks. Gary and  Caluim
brought along the technic powerpuller with video, Micheal had a space ship.
Everyone else including those mentioned brought themselves and a shopping
list for S@H.  It didn't take long for Aaron to place the fire trucks around
the church.

Once Gary arrived and set up the news was revealed:
We have entered a display into the Brisbane Miniature Train Show (RNA
Showgrounds May 4-6). Not normally a hot topic, train chat came alive.
Appologies to micheal, who got a bit leftout, as he had no interest in
trains. Everyone else was a buzz "what do you need?" "can we use your hopper
wagon?"

In the end everyone who wanted to help were assigned a job, containers and
rolling stock are the big requirements. We can't give to much away, you will
just have to come to the show (of course there will be a post show report).

Moving on, closer examination of the church and large house were made. Also
Melody had some of her Lego trinkets to show off. Another great creation of
the day was Kerry's tour bus (it seemed that the ladies of the group were
doing all the work).

Lunch was great, and whilst we all ate Gary in a despriate attemet not to
watch the F1 he was taping it) played the video that comes with the Technic
Power Puller. Note that the real powerpuller has appox 1x10(7) or 10 000 000
times the horsepower of the Lego model. Also playing on the day was the Jack
Stone Video.

After lunch IT began, and as Kerry described it "BUGS go Bezerk with S@H".
Aaron jumped into the hot set, doing the ordering (both on computer and out
loud), whilst Ken manned the spreadsheet (great idea. we were able to keep
track of all orders and all prices). With rumors of 3 Santa Fe engines per
order and 9 engines (7 people) we knew some people might miss out. So with
ths in mind we all drew straws to determine who would get a SFSC should only
three arrive.

The rest off the ordering went well, with the usual order changes at the
last minute but both the spreadsheet and the Lego shpping basket were the same.

We all agreed to meet again in two weeks at Peter's place to go over the
display layout, so we all could know what exactly we were all doing.

Well the scribe has pretty much covered everything, I think. The day was a
success and the first time trains really had their own day even if unoffical .

I think there's a few too many negatives in the above :-) I think we all went
home full!

We all agreed to meet again in two weeks at Peter's place to go over the
display layout, so we all could know what exactly we were all doing.

To be precise, we said we'd try to get together at Peter's on Saturday 16th,
but if anyone can't make that time, Peter said to get in touch and find a
mutually convenient time. Email Peter if you need the address etc.

The track layout has already been made and is set up at Peter's. The need now
is to:

a) organise what trains/carriages etc will run on it

b) decide what buildings and other town setting stuff should surround the
track.

Peter and Gary have already made a start on this stuff (e.g. Gary's station
MOC), but obviously are looking for the rest of us to flesh it all out. Peter
and Gary have done some general "zoning" of the town (which includes a lake).
Basically they want people to look at the layout/zones and take ownership of
chunks of space and supply buildings etc to fit. Due to the curves in the
track, some of the spaces are not rectangular, but Peter has cut up a number
of base plates to fit some of the irregular spaces, so I think he can give you
the baseplate on which to build. If the space is rectangular, then I think you
are supposed to supply your own base plate. I'm not sure if there is an agreed
colour scheme on base plates?

There are a few constraints. Buildings at the front of the display (which is
either 4x2 metres or 4x3 meters -- some confusion reigned) will have to be
relatively lowset to not block the view, but the ones at the back can be high.
We also had some discussion about the structure of buildings. Should we go
with "closed" structures, and not the back-less style used in a lot of Town
sets (or the modern breezeway style with no walls at all). Or do we need more
open buildings to let light in to see interior detail and to see through them?

This links into the related issue of whether buildings should face the roads
in the natural manner or should they always be build "best side" towards the
front of the display (the only angle the public will get).

Probably I should post all of this to the newsgroup, as Peter and Gary are not
inclined to post, and I suspect there may be a few other people who might want
to know all this, or (those further afield) who might have some useful input
from doing it themselves.

Oh, in case nobody said, the train show is the Labour Day (May Day) long
weekend 4-6 May at the Brisbane Exhibition grounds. We'll probably have to
come up with a roster to man the display at some point.

Gary/Peter, correct me if I've misrepresented anything.

If anyone else out there (locally or otherwise) has any useful advice to
contribute on how to go about our first train show, speak up.

Kerry

I meant to cut that bit out. Sorry, my post was based on an email I'd just
sent to Tara.

Congratulations on being the first group in Australia to display a Lego layout
at a train show.
Useful input appended below.

We all agreed to meet again in two weeks at Peter's place to go over the

The track layout has already been made and is set up at Peter's. The need now
is to:

Our layout is at http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=132458
It's a bad copy though, :( stupid computer time-out, make your own from the
.tdl file if interested.
(note! It has been updated since the last meeting, incorporating room for the
Rosco St. station. Note also some half length straight roads, cutting
baseplates is OK isn't it Richard?)
You said yours was 4x3m (or so...)which is about the same as our proposed one.

I assume that, since the layout is already set up that you've got tables sorted
and you're not covering the entire surface with baseplates?

Peter and Gary have already made a start on this stuff (e.g. Gary's station
MOC), but obviously are looking for the rest of us to flesh it all out.
Basically they want people to look at the layout/zones and take ownership of

This is pretty much where we're at (change Peter and Gary for James and Ross).
You can never have too many buildings!

There are a few constraints. Buildings at the front of the display (which is
either 4x2 metres or 4x3 meters -- some confusion reigned) will have to be
relatively lowset to not block the view, but the ones at the back can be high.

My opinion? it doesn't matter, take all styles, mix and match, whatever goes.
If the modelers complain it looks wrong, tell 'em it's LEGO style. The kids
won't complain (in fact the more detail the better).

Oh, in case nobody said, the train show is the Labour Day (May Day) long
weekend 4-6 May at the Brisbane Exhibition grounds. We'll probably have to
come up with a roster to man the display at some point.

Don't underestimate the number of people required here, make sure there's
plenty of volunteers for set up and pack down and chairs to sit on during the
days.

I'll make sure I send up a pair of waggons with the STUDS and Australian LTC
logos on them for you to run!

James (who is still trying to get in contact with someone at LEGO, they've
been overseas!)
