What do I need to provide (other than the venue of course)?

Security guards, cloakroom attendants, parking valets, a minutes secretary,
and a member of parliament to formally open the event!

Seriously, you need clear a couple of table tops to put all the stuff that
people bring, and you need chairs to sit on.. You probably need to have some
(clean) cups/glasses/plates/napkins for eating/drinking.

What about food? How is that usually handled at an event like this?

It's up to the host. Obviously people are in different financial/domestic
situations. For example, it's not a big deal to me to provide food and drink
as the host. But equally I don't expect everyone else to be in the same
situation, so I don't mind chipping in with money or "bring a plate" if that
works better for the host. So if you are hosting, just say what you want
people to do (bring food/drink, bring money for pizza, or bring nothing as
you will provide). Similarly, if you need people to bring their own
cup/glass/chair etc, just say so.

Anything else I need to know for an event like this.

Based on BUGs meetings, things tend to happen without too much effort from
the host. People bring sets/MOCs to show off, stuff to buy/trade/sell,
catalogues and other odds and sods to inspect, and by the time, everyone's
discussed everything, done buying and selling, read all the catalogues,
admired all the sets/MOCs, done some eating/drinking,..., you will find the
day has passed quite pleasurably.

Many LUGnetters find themselves very much on their own in day-to-day life as
far as their interest in Lego goes, so expect to find it a really nice thing
to be surrounded by people who share your interest in Lego!

I may be providing the venue for the first plugs meeting (gotta check with the other occupants of the house to see if its ok first) and I want to know what things I need to think of when hosting events like this. What do I need to provide (other (...) (23 years ago, 12-Oct-01, to lugnet.loc.au)
