Looking at the 2001 catalogue scans

http://www.lugnet.com/jump.cgi?http://collectibles.echostation.com/fbtb/2/

I can't say I'm really excited about the new offerings. I saw about three
things I'd bother with:

* Star Wars Imperial Shuttle
* Technics C3PO
* Technics Imperial Stormtrooper

Most of the new stuff is pretty juniorised. Certainly Technics AFOLs won't
be spending much. There is little new to spend it on, just kiddie stuff. It
seems that current-catalogue robotics will be the primary offering for older
kids and adults in the Technics theme in 2001.

However, on a positive note, the catalogue was very non-sexist compared with
that last catalogue. There were almost no pictures of real people and very
little text (the main culprits last time), just lots of pictures of sets,
which is what I want to see in catalogues! Admittedly women are
under-represented in the minifigs, but at least there are some in the new
Alpha Team.

However, Lego's "construction not destruction" motto seems to be taking more
of a beating. A number of sets feature those projective-shooting cannons in
a distinctly weapon-like manner. It seems that Lego has no problem with
historical weapons (swords, pirate cannons) or futuristic weapons (light
sabres, laser cannons). It seems the ban is purely on contemporary weapons
of war.

remember that this isnt the whole product line and we will probobly see more stuff (large technic for example) later on. Remember that the silver f1 car wasnt shown in the first catalogs for 2000. That said, I will probobly look at getting a technic (...) (24 years ago, 26-Oct-00, to lugnet.loc.au)

(...) The stormtrooper has copped a lot of flak from Lugnetters. (...) Two from six even (assuming bucket-mouth is male). (...) It's an interesting distinction. Construction, destruction, reconstruction. pete.w (24 years ago, 26-Oct-00, to lugnet.loc.au)
