Hello,
This is something that goes around alot, but I have been caught in the • flow! I
have been tricked twice with the internet in buying, with so called OLD • LEGO
SETS. I was thinking the 70's and 80's but I am sure you could help me to • get
a better understanding, using old in terms of Lego is very broad. Sometimes • my
friends say old but it just ends up being a 96 or 97 set just a bit dusty.

Do you want "old" Lego because it might be valuable, useful for selling or
trading?
If so, then I find that going by theme and set size is better than simply by
age. Anyone should feel free to shoot this down in flames, it's just what
I've gone by from looking at a lot of auctions, and numbers are approximate
anyway. In any case, if I'm ever in an out-of-the-way store and see a set
that meets these conditions (and can afford it), I buy it on the spot,
because there's usually someone on LUGNET that wants it.

Pirates - valuable regardless of set size or age.
Trains - valuable if it's earlier than the 4561. If it's 12V train track,
then it's probably also valuable but only to certain people.
Castle - valuable if it's a sub-theme before Fright Knights.
Space - valuable if it's a sub-theme before Exploriens (and even Exploriens
might be valuable to some people).
Town - valuable if the cars have door pieces, and if it's a set before 1995,
and especially if it's big (more than 500 pcs?).
Time Cruisers/Twisters/Losers - not really ever valuable, even though people
often want the bigger sets.
Basic - valuable if it's complete and before 1993, but I'm not sure about
this. The 1990 Basic sets 725,735 were REALLY REALLY good.
Technic - valuable if it's a really big set (bigger than 800 pcs?).
Fabuland - absolutely no idea if this is valuable! Ask Sue Ann ;-)

Cheers,
Paul
