There are two main ways of pricing, one is to make a guess as to what sets are
likely to be in it based on clues and price using some fraction of their value
(to account for likely incompleteness, damaged pieces, etc.). This is a good
way to tell about what something is worth, if you can. Clues (from easiest to
hardest) include what instructions or boxes are included, what figs, and what
rare pieces. Asking the seller what's there is also a good metric.
Often this is not available to you though. So the other common way is by
weight. As a rule, most of us don't go over 10 USD or so per pound when buying
this way. I'll leave it to you to translate that to AUD per kilo (although 40
AUD per kilo seems about the same, more or less), and in fact for that price
you should expect to be getting Lego in pretty good condition, not all banged
up and dirty.
The average price of a piece, new seems to be around 10 cents USD although
that varies wildly... so the weight mechanism actually works better.
To sum up, I usually bid based on weight but gamble on worth based on what I
see that is rare, hoping that my bid is less than what it's worth. I tend to
personally stay below 8 USD/lb.
Hope that helps. Believe it or not, this is a common question and has been
answered a number of times in the more mainstream groups like market.appraisal
etc. It might even be in the FAQ, which isn't finished.
