My own suggestion from Anaheim to LL-CA would be something like this:
1.) Take the Amtrak from Anaheim to Oceanside. You will be arriving at the
Oceanside Transit Center where you can easily catch local bus routes.
2.) From the transit center you’ll want to catch route 101 southbound and ask
for a transfer.
3.) You’ll want to get off at the Carlsbad Village transit stop where you’ll
catch the route 344 to LL-CA.

Well, just to finish the story, ...
I did the research on the WWW on this route and had figured out the timetable
for getting there, although as so often happens with public transport, none of
the services seemed to connect very well so it was a going to be a fairly long
process, and I hadn’t quite figured out how to get to/from my hotel to the
Anaheim Amtrak station but I reckoned I could find that out in Anaheim. Nothing
was going to stand in the way of this determined AFOL getting to Legoland :-)
Then, of course, I arrive in Anaheim, pick up a local tour brochure, and see
that there are Coach USA tour buses that run from Anaheim to all of the San
Diego tourist attractions (Legoland, Zoo, SeaWorld, Legoland, Tijuana etc). I
booked at the hotel concierge and got picked up from my hotel and dropped off at
Legoland, and then vice versa in the evening. No thinking or planning required
on my part at all really. The tour price included admission so doing the sums, I
guess I paid about $30 for the transport component. Public transport would have
been a bit cheaper but less direct and more hassle.
For anyone with an annual pass to theme parks, the Coach USA brochures says that
they have transportation-only prices as well (but the costs weren’t listed in
the brochure).
So, for the record, the easiest way to get from Anaheim to Legloand without a
car is to use Coach USA with door-to-door service from your hotel in Anaheim.
