I know that I personally harbor a fear of LUGNET becoming a platform for free
advertising for TLC.  I don't really know what harm would befall the community
from that, but it seems somehow wrong.  I don't know how to express this fear
succinctly.  It feels irrational.  I don't mean to imply that TLC would ever
take advantage of LUGNET, but, well, business is business, and in business if
something is free, you take advantage of that.

Don't let your irrational fears hold you back. Define them and deal with them.

I work in a big business. The objective is to avoid biting the hand that
feeds, avoid killing the golden goose etc. I think you can trust TLC to
generally respect what you have going here, and to very occasionally
over-step the mark.

Two years ago, LD made a cash donation to LUGNET.  Brad projected high hopes
for there being additional donations in the future.  I personally would feel
a lot more comfortable with TLC's long-term expanded presence here if it was
demonstrably interested some sort of ongoing financial support.

I would prefer something more at arm's length. Why don't you define the
kinds of advertising which you think would be exploitative, and attach a
price tag? Then when TLC tries to exploit LUGNET, send them an invoice!

And use a level playing field approach. When ANYONE advertises
innapropriately on LUGNET, send them an invoice!

This isn't the only fan site on the internet. How do webmasters of other
great fan sites handle the relationship with the source of the object of
admiration?
