Good idea.
Amazon.com (in the US anyway) gives a limited version of this, letting you
select between "ship in minimum number of packages" or "ship each item as it
becomes available (for extra cost"... thus giving the customer control AND
recovering costs for the "many small shipments" if that's what the customer
actually wants.
Their implementation isn't as fine grained as I'd like (it wanted to put all
but one item tha twas listed as "available now" in with my order for Mario's
robot book that won't ship till Feb/Mar) but it's in the right direction
