Here is basicly how it would work.
Lego would:
1.set constraints on the design (size, number of pieces, theme etc)
and 2.would provide a list of "approved" pieces that can be used in the
design (which would be a "cut down" version of the master list that they
have for set designers now)
You as the contest entrant aggree to:
1.provide a full list of parts used to make the model to the judging
pannel (so they can disquialify the ones that used parts not on the
list)
2.provide some good photos also (obviously)
and 3.turn all rights to the design over to lego
The winner gets:
1.his design made into a set (exactly how the design got turned into a
set would be up to lego) that would be sold at shop at home (similar to
how they can do the sculptures now), complete with instructions for the
set.
2.a free copy of the set (mabie)
3.their name on the set (designed by xxx) or mabie just on the shop at
home page and catalog
Anyone else think this is a good idea or think of anything else that
needs to be said about it? Or is it a bad idea? If it is a bad idea,
why?
It sounds like a win-win situation:
AFOLs get to design the sort of set they want to see, non junorised etc.
LEGO gets a set design for essentially "free" that they know AFOLs will
buy
As for minifigs, whatever is appropriate to the set (lego would probobly
have to set a number depending on the size of the set). Depending on the
theme (construction or fire or police or whatever, they just specify the
appropriate torsos, heads etc in the approved parts list)
I for one would enter this contest, assuming cad models were allowed (or
once I get an 8880 :) and assuming that, for once, someone at lego
direct did the right thing and removed that stupid restriction that only
people from the US can enter :(

| If they would put the designers name on it, I think it might get folks to be more willing to submit some of their best designs. I think that sometimes recognition is as important an enticement as monetary rewards would be. Gary Istok (...) (24 years ago, 16-Mar-01, to lugnet.lego.direct)
