Having built all but Hogwarts Castle (I haven't found it yet), I must
say that I am pretty impressed by these sets. I enjoyed building all of
them.

I did have some trouble with the roof of Hagrid's Hut, but I'm not sure
what could be done without adding a lot of pieces. I think you could
build something using wing part 3933 (
http://guide.lugnet.com/partsref/search.cgi?q=3933 ) or it's counterpart
plus some hinges and turntables, but it would probably add close to 100
parts. What might have been nice would have been 8 new panels out of
regular ABS with some trick to connect them. Then 4 or 6 could be used
to make square or octagonal roofs. Actually, all they would need is a
hinge at the bottom, and a sufficient thickness to hold well, and the
rubber band at the top could still work.

For anyone who hasn't looked closely at these, think arches. Just about
every set has half a dozen or more arches.

I really like that all the main character minifigs come with two sets of
clothes, a Gryffindor uniform and more regular clothes (which will be
very welcome in town settings, being somewhat rumpled as a counterpart
to all the suits and whatnot we have, and will also be useable in other
themes). I am bummed that Draco only appears in Hogwarts Castle. That
will make it hard to build up a collection of Slytherin minifigs. It
would also be nice to have a small set with a minifig each from the
other two houses. While Snape might not have a glow in the dark head in
the books, it's a neat head so I won't complain. I'm also glad they did
the expected with Professor Quirrell's head.

Some folks have complained about the capes with stars, but I think
they're cool. Of course after I get as many of those as plain brown and
black capes, I may think differently, but then, how many capes will I
really use.

I'm ecstatic to get a purple wizard's hat. That is just the thing needed
for my pink castle (which will use the Belville roofs, with the purple
ones for the wizard's tower [already planned long before seeing the
Harry Potter sets]). The additional pink and purple parts will surely be
helpful in that castle.

All though Fluffy is not perfect, he is a welcome addition to the
rapidly growing LEGO bestiary. Of course the owls and rats are welcome
also, huge as they are. One must ask what they feed the spiders in
Hogwarts though... just about every one of them is trans-orange or
anti-freeze (not that that's bad, I have plenty of black spiders). Green
frogs/toads is cool (of course the trans green ones from Belville are
cool also).

I strongly suspect I will be buying plenty of copies of Hogwarts Castle.
Hmm, I can see a large tan office building to use all those tan 1x2x5
columns though...

One thing folks haven't noted, but I think is great: most of the sets
use 8x8 and 8x16 superbricks instead of baseplates. I do wish they were
the 12x24 ones, but I'll settle for tons of 8x16 ones.

Whoo Hooo!! My Lugnet account is fixed so I can post again! Three days ago I picked up four of the sets from Walmart. I got Hogwarts Express #4708, Hagrid's Hut #4707, Snape's Class #4705, and Diagon Alley Shops #4723. They didn't have the castle (...) (23 years ago, 28-Sep-01, to lugnet.harrypotter)
