In the latest batch of images from Selçuk, there were quite a few new
Fabuland images...  I couldn't help feeling sadly nostalgic as each of • these
found its way into the DB last night.  It's too bad Fabuland was cancelled,
although it did run for nearly 10 years, and there are at least 91 known
sets:

I'm sad to see that its gone as well.  I never had Fabuland myself (my first
lego sets were space, looking through the 1978/1979 ones it looks like I had
quite a few of them), but my brother's first legos were Fabuland.  He liked
them a lot as a child.

I have to say that from what I can tell that the current lego sets are
pretty lacking compared to what we had as a kid.  The philosophy really
seems to have changed (and it probably reflects changes in society as a
whole).  As a child lego was very much a creative toy, and playing with the
things that you built was secondary to actually building them.  These days
it seems like it is being positioned as much as a playing toy as a creative
toy, and the themes are kind of like different action figure brands.  One
thing which really disappoints me about this is that Lego Space is no longer
non-violent (as it was when I was a kid), but has turned into something more
like Star Wars where there are good guys and bad guys.  I guess I really
realized this when they announced the Star Wars theme.

Its also disappointing that buildings are no longer built out of bricks, but
out of wall sections.  Its sad that there will never be another yellow
castle with hundreds of little 2x1 pieces.
