Larry, Jeff, and other dear friends,
Hopefully, me, my wife and my parents are all OK. Even my wife's parents are
OK (by miracle), they were living in Degirmendere, which is the almost exact
centre of the quake).
I returned back to home from the disaster site (I was in Golcuk -
Degirmendere region for rescue missions, just like thousands of other
voluntary citizens and many fearless and helpful foreign rescue teams)
recently, and I'm very sorry to say that the situation is not (even a little
bit) good for many others. When we left from the site like many other rescue
teams, since there is no hope for life after, there are still more than 20
000 people under the collapsed buildings, besides more than 13 000 dead were
already recorded. It's been said that almost 700 000 people is homeless and
need extreme help now.
Rescue missions was almost a tragedy, although hundreds have been returned
back to life with voluntary support, because of the lack of the necessary
equipment and experience, and much more than that, because of the LACK OF
THE GOVERNMENT!...How can a government take necessary actions days after
even the most far away country's rescue teams start to work for saving
life?..I'm full of hate for now and sorry but can not talk about the subject
now. I hope nobody would face ever again with the obligation (caused by the
lack of necessities) to leave someone alive under the wreckage for an
unbeatable slow death, while he or she still crying for help. I hope nobody
would feel ever again the small of dead human bodies.
Larry, as you asked, the only need from now on is money. Only Izmit is in
the need of houses that can cover more than 70 000 families.
Please accept my best and deepest respect to the help from all your
countries, especially for the fearless and professional rescue teams. I
worked with Fairfax and American Rescue Team groups, as well as German Fire
Fighters, and also hear lots about the teams from other countries. Most of
us owe you much.
Regards,
Selçuk

| The entire world feels Turkey's grief. Without denigrating other worthy organizations, it's worth noting that the Red Cross delivers 92 cents of every dollar donated, making it one of the most efficient charities out there.
