Anders, (you should be getting your CD in a few days)
The gray garage frame and base were first introduced in 1966 in the #325 Shell
Station, and later (after TLG used up the inventory of white frames and bases,
circa 1967-68) the gray garage bases and frames were also found in:
1) continental European #235 Garage Parts Packs (circa 1967-70),
2) continental European #236 Garage Sets (circa 1967-70),
3) UK/AUS #435 Garage Parts Packs (circa 1967-70).
4) USA #065 2 Garage Parts Packs (1969-71).
The gray garage doors were produced only as prototypes in 1955, but never put
into production.
What was put into production in 1955 were (retirement dates are approximate):
Red and white garage bases (red retired 1956, white retired 1967).
Red and white garage frames (red retired 1962, white retired 1967)
Red and white garage doors (red retired 1971, white 1965).
The red garage doors lasted the longest, and were produced from 1955 until 1971
(along with the gray base and frame).
The 1955 introduction of the Town Plan flip-up garage parts packs and sets
actually has one of the most complex histories of all early LEGO items (hard to
believe something so simple could be so complex).
However, the #236/#1236 Garage Sets (4 digit sets produced only
Denmark/Norway/Sweden 1955-58) is probably THE MOST COMPLEX Lego Model set of
the 1950's and 1960's. There were something like 8 different box designs in 2
different major set versions (flat box with parts held in place by cardboard
cutout & included 1:87 VW Bus, and rectangular box with loose parts and no 1:87
vehicle).
This is all explained in LEGO CD...
CHAPTER 31 LEGO GARAGE/SERVICE STATIONS & ACCESSORIES (1955-85)
CHAPTER 7 LEGO TOWN MODEL SETS (1955-71) under #236/#1236 Garage sets.
I spent a lot of time discussing this with other AFOLs, as well as the Billund
Archive folks.
I think that one thing that will surprise a lot of folks who purchase the LEGO
CD will be just how complex early LEGO parts and sets really are. Even though
all the 1955-64 LEGO sets and parts packs fit onto a 2 sided 1 sheet LEGO
catalog, the variations from (continental European) country to country and from
region (UK/AUS/USA/CAN) to region... varies greatly!
Cheers,
Gary Istok
