What is the difference in what this means?  Or do they both mean the same thing?
It is interesting to note that the Dutch parts packs of the same era used only
"Systeem in het Spel".
Also, these Belgian sets also say: "Du System dans le jeu".

Hi,

Systeem in het spel = System in the play (as in playing with toys)
Systeem bij het spel = System with the play
Du system dans le jeu = System in the play

In this case, the two Dutch (and the French) frases actually mean the same
thing, "System of play".
Why the difference between Flemish and Dutch?
I hope I don't offend anyone, Flemish people speak better the Dutch than the
Dutch themselves most of the time, but sometimes the Flemish say thing a little
bit different than the Dutch.
I think it's because of the fact that the box is from the 50's. Nowadays there
really wouldn't be a difference because it would be way to expensive to make two
boxes ;-)
The French frase is on the box because they speak two (actually three, Dutch,
French, German) languages in Belgium, so everything is bilangual.

Hope this helps,

Saskia

(...) Thank you Saskia, Here are the languages (by country) written on each country's Lego boxes from 1955-58: Denmark: "System i leg" Norway: "System i lek" Sweden: "System i lek" Germany: "System im Spiel" Austria: "System im Spiel" Switzerland: (...) (19 years ago, 19-Jun-05, to lugnet.general)

I also posted this in the local Belgian newsgroup... From 1955-58 Lego boxes had the text on the outside in the local language. Of course there were only 8 Lego countries by 1958. And each country had "Lego System of Play" in the local languages. (...) (19 years ago, 18-Jun-05, to lugnet.general, lugnet.loc.be)
