I just posted the 1968 FAO Schwarz catalog here:

Contains the Samsonite 118 train which has always been something of a mystery.

Dear Eric!

Call me confused - but I do not see the Samsonite 118 (similar or identical to
European 119). But what I recognize is the 116 train set for cheap (?) 20$.

Does anybody haven an idea what the exchange rate between Dollar and Deutschmark
har been in 1968?

Here the 116 set has cost approx. 100 DM. So the exchange rate could have been
near 1:5.

A while ago you have posted a link to a 1969 advertisement which contained in
fact 118 and the legendary set 371.

Hallo Ben!

A couple of things.....

The exchange rate in 1968 was about DM 4,00 = $1.00.  I know that very well
because I was 15 years old visiting relatives in Germany in 1968.  I still have
a pair of Hummel figurines that I paid DM 90,- (from factory employees), which I
wrote down at the time as $23.50.  (They are the large Umbrella Boy and Umbrella
Girl, today they are still available in retail stores, but at $2000 each!)  And
I still have them...

The #116 looks correct.  But is there a difference between #116 and #127?

I also have the original to the 1969 advertisement with the #118 and mysterious
#371.
